Field Grey Notes on Uniforms: Item No.2 in Field Grey's notes on uniforms aims to continue the popular myth of the St. Bernard's Brandy Barrel created in the 19th Century by the painter Sir Edward Lanseer in his painting 'Alpine Mastiffs'. The painting depicts two St. Bernards rescuing a distressed traveller. The brandy barrel was added to the painting by Lanseer purely for 'interest'. Since then the St. Bernard wearing a barrel has become an iconic image, associated with the Swiss Alps. This card pays homage to the myth in true fashion by inviting the recipient to have their dog wear the card. A recent Google image search for 'St. Bernard's Brandy Barrel' produced evidence of the card taking its place amongst the range of images of Barrel souvenirs and St. Bernard's.
